Great catch! Consult your DM and then (hopefully) have fun with it. Are these one and the same? I would say yes, but maybe that additional step of transformation could convince other DMs otherwise?Īt any rate, I'd allow it. Relentless Hex would then instead target the risen spectre. Perhaps there could be some issue with respect to the target? That is, Accursed Spectre targets "the soul of a person you slay", something that not many other spells or features allow you target (are there similar abilities? maybe Soul Cage?). I'm trying to figure out why part of me thinks this shouldn't work. And the presence of the word 'curse' there is impossible to ignore. In such cases I would tend to err on the side of the player.įor me, I guess some of the 'iffyness' comes from the fact that, yes, often the first sentence in a feature is flavor - but that is certainly not a hard and fast rule. Doing something like that could allow you to send the Specter to deal with groups or secondary enemies - as a sort of pseudo damage-over-time AoE - while you focus down the Big Cheese with your Hexblade's Curse.Īnd it also helps future proof other invocations that may come out in future books that are described as 'cursing' the target with their effect.Īs a DM I would allow this - it is a little bit iffy, in my opinion, but not overpowered, and certainly cool. Plus, ruling it this way also makes the Accursed Specter a valid target for Maddening Hex - the Specter even gets a few bonus temporary hit points to be able to tank being the target. It could just as easily have said, "you can magically bind, capture, or control the soul of a creature you slay" to convey the same idea. Other than how it interacts with features like this, the Specter wouldn't really work any differently if the feature never mentioned a curse or cursing at all.
